This is frame from my first non-fiction film, Smuggling Roses. The film portrays a binational love affair. Neither can cross into the others country due to their personal immigration status.
It was the first time in history the U.S. Border Patrol permitted a filmmaker to climb up on top of the actual border fence to produce a scene. What you see here is a romantic date between two lovers. She is in the U.S. and he is in Mexico. They meet on weekends on their days off. He brings her flowers and passes them through the cracks in the fence. He does not declare the transnational transportation of the agriculture, which is illegal and considered “smuggling.”
